Flintlock Infantry Musket, Saxony Model 1811 (“Vienna Model”)

Tapered round barrel, breech plug with raised rear sight, deeply stamped oval acceptance mark “S. S”. Flat lock plate with a smith’s mark located between the frizzen spring; brass pan, brass furniture, and brass trigger guard in the typical Saxon style. Dark walnut stock featuring a cheekpiece and inventory stamps “S. 98” and “MM”; original ramrod. Total length 145 cm, barrel length 106 cm. Small area of ​​damage to the stock beneath the forward barrel band; otherwise in very good condition and fully functional (strong springs and crisp action). The weapon offered here matches the dimensions and markings described in the aforementioned literature, with the exception of the caliber (17.5 mm instead of 16.5 mm). This discrepancy is explained in Udo Vollmer’s volume on page 102: “With the procurement of weapons from Calnot in Vienna, the first step was taken toward the French 17.5 mm caliber—the standard later used in the field against Russia by the *Grande Armée*.” See also the very recent article on this musket by Udo Lander in *DWJ* (February 2026).
